Belly Fat: are you an apple or a pear

May 30, 2017

Being slim is not enough; just as being fat is not “fat”. It matters where and how fatty tissue is distributed in your body. Belly fat is  is sneaky, because it’s tucked away inside your body, in-between your vital organs and gives you “a false sense of security” about how healthy you actually are.

You may not be  overweight, but still have too much belly fat for your size. Belly fat has been proven to be a major risk factor for the following:

  • Inflammation, which increases your risk for coronary heart disease, dementia and certain cancers.
  • Reduced sensitivity for insulin, which could lead to diabetes
  • Worsen symptoms for asthma patients

How will you know if you have too much body fat?

  1. Use a tape and measure the smallest area around your waist or belly button
  2. Now measure the widest area around your hips, where you feel bony potrusion
  3. Then divide the first figure by the second figure

Results:

  • If you are female your results should not exceed 0,8 (apples are above 0,8; pears are below 0,8 in women)
  • If you are male your results should not exceed 0,9  (apples are above 0,9; pears are below 0, in men)

June 16, 2016

Diabetes is a  killer. According to data from the WHO the number of people with diabetes has risen from 108 million in 1980 to 422 million in 2014. Diabetes has been rising more rapidly in middle- and low-income countries. Diabetes is a major cause of blindness, kidney failure, heart attacks, stroke and lower limb amputation. In this video Dr. Susan Enjema Aweh – fondly known as Dr. SEA explains diabetes in simple terms.
A good portion of diabetes related complications occurs in low income settings which are usually uninformed due to low literacy rates. We thus hope to make a difference by addressing these issues in a language spoken by all; a lingua franca spoken by over 200 million people in Africa and the Carribean. The ever growing internet and mobile platforms is where we hope to meet some of them and others who can pass on the message.
