Increased intake of red meat is associated with kidney failure

July 19, 2016

Recent results of a prospective study of 63,257 Chinese adults in Singapore, led by Woon-Puay Koh, shows a link between high consumption of red meat and the occurrence of kidney failure. The people were followed up on an average of 15,5 years and results could show a dose-related association between red meat and kidney failure. No association was found with intakes of poultry, fish, eggs, or dairy products. Soy and legumes appeared to be slightly protective. Substituting red meat with other sources of protein reduced the risk of ESRD by up to 62%.
